The value of correct food labelling

Recently the attention of food manufacturers was drawn to the value of correct food labelling in an episode of Carte Blanche...

A consumer’s husband had suffered renal failure and as a result was following a stringent low fat, low salt and low sugar diet. The consumer made use of food labels when grocery shopping, comparing the nutritional values of food products and ensuring that the product fitted the guidelines she had. Her findings were that a food labeled "reduced fat" had more fat than its "non-lean" counterpart.

Food manufacturing and accurate nutritional labelling is often difficult to keep in sync, as it is time consuming and often an expensive exercise.

However, it is important to concentrate energies on ensuring that information on food labels is accurate for the label reading consumer.
