Exciting new Food Safety Centre

Tiger Brands has collaborated with the Stellenbosch University Food Science Department to create the Centre for Food Safety, as an expression of their intention to develop food safety in South Africa. This is a one-of-a-kind applied food science research consortium founded by Stellenbosch University and the food industry, with Tiger Brands being the founding member. There is still opportunity for other food industry role players to contribute to the development of the centre and join the collaboration.

The objectives of the Centre are to provide the food industry with expert opinion and academic support, to conduct research in food safety, and to participate effectively with government to ensure that food safety regulations are based on sound scientific evidence. Professor Pieter Gouws, Acting Director for the Centre, emphasised that it would be a hub for stakeholders to develop and exchange knowledge, experience and expertise in food safety, food defence and food processing. Additionally, the Centre will play a leading role in consumer education on food-related issues.
