Meet our #regulatorynerds

Have you ever wondered who the faces are behind the regulatory and nutrition team at FACTS? Gabrielle Jackson, Karen Horsburgh and Roxanne McCaffrey are a team of three dietitians with 40 years of combined experience, and refer to themselves good-humouredly as #regulatorynerds. This team loves deep-diving into the finest details of food regulations, often resulting in long discussions that reflect their passion for regulatory interpretation and compliance. Gabrielle and Roxanne both also have private practices of their own, which give them a unique understanding of the consumer’s perspective.

As food regulations are often quite technical and complex, and there are usually numerous regulations that must all be considered at the same time, their integrated approach ensures that there are always at least two members of the team involved in every project. While this minimises errors, it also provides an opportunity to weigh up differing opinions – yes, that happens quite often!

An essential aspect that they’ve learnt over the years is to consider not only the letter of the law, but also the intention and the spirit behind it. And let’s not forget their favourite saying – that there are ‘50 shades of regulatory grey’. Their ability to distinguish between them comes from years of experience and relationships with the regulators.

If you want to see our regulatory and nutrition team in action, and benefit from their wealth of experience and knowledge, we have some upcoming workshops in August and September, in both Joburg and Cape Town!

WORKSHOP | SA food labelling regulations

With the tagline ‘All you need to know and where to find it’, this face-to-face two-day workshop aims to provide an understanding of all the regulations relevant to food labelling.

WORKSHOP | Applying your labelling knowledge

‘Let’s get practical!’ is an additional half day where we’ll work systematically through putting a label together, giving guidance to ensure that your final label is 100% compliant.

Register now by clicking on the banners above. You too can become a #regulatorynerd!
