The new South African National Standard (SANS) 22000:2019 Food Safety Management Systems – Requirements for any organisation in the food chain – was approved for publishing in March this year, and has now been published.
What’s new?
At first glance the standard is overwhelming, filled with an abundance of new and additional content and boasting over 30 new definitions. However, turn to the last couple of pages, and you’ll see a neat summary of what changes have been made since the previous version.
In summary, the standard follows the Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle approach to food safety systems, and includes the following new sections (to name only a few):
- Section 6.1: Actions to address risks and opportunities;
- Section 8.1: Operational planning and control; and
- Section 10.1: a whole section on non-conformity and corrective action.
The standard is comprehensive, and has been broken down into appropriate steps to follow to ensure peak optimisation of an organisation’s food safety management system.
Unfortunately, the standard is not freely available; it must be purchased. Should you or your organisation have any questions or queries on deciphering the standard, please contact FACTS to assist.
