I started my journey in science with no specific idea of which industry I wanted to enter. I quickly realised that the options are endless. Although I was interested in the food industry, I never thought I would have the privilege of working as a scientist in this industry. Every day there’s something new to learn, and new problems to solve. The FACTS team has a contagious passion for science and solving problems. This has allowed me to realise how amazing science can be when you’re working as part of a team.

Hestie is a SANAS accredited technical signatory responsible for preparing samples for testing, as well as conducting the tests for detection of protein and DNA residues in food products. She is also responsible for  ensuring compliance with the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards in the laboratory.

Hestie obtained her M.Sc degree cum laude in biochemistry, with her focus being on immunology. During her studies her aim was to develop a DNA vaccine against mycoplasma infections in ostriches. Her project also entailed the expression of a component of Immunoglobulin A and purification of this protein.

When Hestie is not in the lab she enjoys spending time with family and friends, dancing, and baking. She also loves spending time in nature, admiring its beauty.
